Negative Bias
our brains are wired to remember the negative more vividly, but being AWARE of this helps offset it
This might sound like:
“He/She ALWAYS hurts my feelings/ judges me/ says… does that thing!”
“It always rains when…”
“I never can catch a break!”
“This always happens!
Perhaps it would help to change this into:
I know he sometimes criticizes me, but I also know he loves me unconditionally.
It is unfortunate that it is raining, but looking on the bright side…
It hurts my heart that I don’t have this thing I feel I need, but I have overcome obstacles bigger than this one before.
I am glad my brain tries to protect me by remembering past disappointments and struggles, but this is a totally new situation. Let’s see how it goes.
