assuming the other person feels or thinks a certain way, based on their behavior
It may sound like this:
“He hasn’t called me back. He must not be interested.”
“My soup is cold. That waiter did this on purpose because I…”
“That homeless man is just lazy — he doesn’t have a disability.”
“Did you see the look she just gave me? She is definitely…”
“My boss/ neighbor/ friend/ mate did this… That means she/he thinks/ feels…”
It may help if we change this to something like one of these:
He hasn’t called me back. I’ll call him and see what’s up.
My soup is cold. I’ll let the waiter know and ask for a new one.
I don’t know anything about what that homeless man has been through, but I do know that all of us have hard times — and some worse than others.
I cannot know what this other person is feeling or thinking, because they have a completely different personality and set of experiences from me. All I can do is let them know how I feel or what I think, in this situation.
