What KIND of Nature Nerd are YOU?
Like true bibliophiles can love the physical book more than the words within, I love MANY plants for their morphology or appearance, beyond mere usefulness.
I consider myself a “nature nerd” cuz I get a THRILL from knowing intimate lil facts of biology or ecology, and SEEING them in the wild!
When I set out on this walk, one intention I set was to check on a patch of coltsfoot just over a half mile up the road.
Coltsfoot flowers appear NOW, earliest spring and for awhile yet…
But their LEAVES develop later, when you cannot hope to see a flower.
Having watched the leaves develop along the roadside of my distant neighbors’ home all last summer and autumn, I was eager to spot a coltsfoot flower or two.
Mind you, I would NOT forage here… BUT, honestly, I do not need to HARVEST a plant, to ENJOY it…!
As I scanned the roadside patch, noting each lil sunny yellow head – 7 or more along that whole little stretch of road – I spotted one lil runt in a precarious position, root disturbed.
Expecting nothing, I gathered what I could and literally tucked it into my bossom. Half an hour later, I gently planted it into an empty spot within my indoor garden.
That was 3 days ago, and this lil trooper is growing strong and showing off its characteristic scaly textured peduncle stem, diminutive as it is.
I have named it, “Acceptance with JOY”, in honor of one of my FAVE parts of Hannah Hurnard’s “Hinds Feet on High Places“.
After my fifth walk in six days during the unseasonably warm weather we’ve had, I added some lovely little bits of moss and shells I gathered, to keep the little coltsfoot flower company, so to speak. And look how TALL my little friend has grown! <3 It made me realize, I do not know where to expect the leaves to emerge – how far from the base of the flower. That is one way in which the other objects will help: for location reference.
