While the Michigan winter melted into an early spring warm spell, I went for five walks in six days, the last two of which were along the same river, on either side of the same bridge.
Both days I saw a fisherman in the same spot – different fishermen, but both having had luck there with trout, bass, and a few others. I was surprised, not thinking the river deep enough for the purported 20-inchers, at least in the areas I am familiar with.
Interestingly, one of the trouts’ favorite early spring foods kept landing on me in a friendly, ticklish way: stoneflies!
At first I did not know anything about these aquatic-born insects outside of the fact that they were docile and persistent. Now that Michigan has plummeted back into near-freezing temperatures (70 degrees yesterday but 30 degrees today!), I’ve had more time indoors and took the time to learn more about order PLECOPTERA.
